Decorating lime finishes: interior and exterior options
Breathable finishes
Any finish applied over lime must remain breathable. Lime-based walls are designed to absorb and release moisture, and this behaviour depends on the finishes allowing that movement to continue.
Non-breathable paints or coatings interfere with this process and are not suitable for use over lime.
External finishes
Externally, mineral and silicate paints are commonly used. These finishes bond with the surface and remain vapour-permeable, allowing moisture to disperse naturally.
Limewash is also used in some situations, particularly where a softer appearance or traditional finish is required.
Colour choice is broad, but material compatibility takes precedence over appearance.
Internal finishes
Internally, limewash, clay paints and mineral paints are all appropriate when applied to lime plaster.
The choice depends on the room, the level of wear expected and the desired finish, rather than on colour alone.
Finishes are selected to work with the wall construction, not to seal it.
